Andreas Cahling by Mapplethorpe

This photograph of Andreas Cahling was taken by Robert Mapplethorpe in 1980, the same year the Swedish-born bodybuilder, then 28, took the overall title at Arnold Schwarzenegger's IFBB Professional Mr. International contest. Throughout the decade of world-class competing that followed, Cahling was invariably a finalist, winning high placings at both the Mr. Universe and IFBB Pro World Championships. In 2001, a gelatin silver print of this 15.8 x 15.8 inch Mapplethorpe photo--signed, dated, and numbered 1/10--was sold at auction by Christie's for $3,525. In the Video Section I've just now posted a 4 1/2 minute extract from a posing film Cahling made in his mid-20s, shortly after arriving in the United States in 1976. He will celebrate his 60th birthday on November 19.
